Hanafin-obit-webWAKEFIELD — John F. Hanafin, 72, of Wakefield, formerly of Melrose and Winchester, died at his home on April 5.

John was born and raised in Charlestown and was a graduate of Melrose High School. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He resided in Melrose for many years, Winchester for several years and the past 14 years in Wakefield.

John worked as a jeweler for Descenza and Long Jeweler’s and was also the owner of Henry’s on the Plaza in Boston for many years.

John had a great sense of humor, was always kind to everyone and was a collector and appraiser of antiques, artifacts and postcards.

He was an aficionado of Russian royalty and had a vast knowledge of gem stones.

John knew sign language, loved animals and traveled all around the world multiple times.

John was the loving son of the late Gerald and Helen (Drew) Hanafin. He is survived by a partner, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Sunday, April 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a prayer service in the funeral home at 5 p.m.
