OBIT_Merritt,-Ruth-webSAUGUS — Ruth A. (Cowhig) Merritt, 81, of Saugus, died April 5, 2017.

She was born in Everett on June 24, 1935, a daughter of William and Florence (Sweeney) Cowhig. Ruth was raised in Revere and graduated from Revere High School.

Ruth married Jay Merritt in 1958 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Revere and raised their family in Saugus. Ruth was a retiree of Verizon and active in the Melrose Garden Club. In her retirement she devoted herself to her grandchildren and her great-granddaughters. The beloved wife of Jay Merritt of Saugus, she was the loving and devoted mother of Michael Merritt of Grafton, N.H., and Krista Merritt and her husband, Pete Kouis of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

She was the proud grandmother of Christopher and Patrick and the proud great-grandmother of Angelina and Sophia. She was also the caring sister of William Cowhig and his wife Eileen of Topsfield and is also survived by several nephews and a niece.

Visiting hours were held on Monday at the Gately Funeral Home in Melrose. Her funeral was held from the Gately Funeral Home on Tuesday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret’s Church in Saugus. Interment was private.
