WAKEFIELD — Joseph R. Zagarella of Wakefield, formerly of Melrose, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at his residence surrounded by family.

Mr. Zagarella was born in Melrose, and is the loving husband of Mary A. (Brown) Zagarella. He was the beloved father of Ann T. Zagarella of Melrose and Frank J. Zagarella of Wakefield. He was the son of Frank J. and Emma (Ragnetti) Zagarella. He was the cherished brother of Emma Dragan and her husband David of Marblehead and Teresa McCarthy and her husband Myles of Stoneham. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Zagarella was the son-in-law of the late Mr. and Mrs. John L. Brown of Wakefield, and leaves behind several sister and brother in laws.

Mr. Zagarella was raised in Wakefield and had been a Melrose resident for over 40 years before moving back to Wakefield. He was a graduate of Austin Preparatory School, class of 1969, and had earned his master’s degree from Suffolk University. Mr. Zagarella retired from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church 1155 Main St., Wakefield at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8 p.m.
