Sink Rockport 3-2
NORTH READING — The Lady Hornets jumped over the .500 mark for the first time on the season with their 3-2 victory over the Rockport Vikings girls’ tennis team on May 3.
Senior captain Marissa Galuppo earned her second victory of the season in a tough three-setter at first singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
At third singles junior Megan Griffin cruised in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior captain Aly Budny fell at second singles in two sets, 6-1, 6-4.
At first doubles senior captain Emily Zhang and junior Megan Landers won a three-set affair, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
Sophomores Jill Coveny and Kim Bockley saw their first action of the season at second doubles. Unfortunately they lost in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 3-6.
Fall to Pioneers 4-1
The Hornets took on CAL powerhouse Lynnfield for the second and final time in the regular season on Thursday. Once again the Pioneers showed their prowess and downed North Reading 4-1.
Aly Budny picked up the only win of the match in a three-set nail biter at second singles, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(1).
At third singles Megan Griffin was swept in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Marissa Galuppo was also swept in two sets at first singles, 6-0, 6-4.
Juniors Kylie Scher and Alexa Galuppo returned to the court at second doubles and ultimately lost 6-1, 6-3.
At first doubles Emily Zhang and Megan Landers pushed hard but were defeated in two sets 6-3, 7-5.
Upcoming matches
After press time, the Lady Hornets traveled to Hamilton-Wenham on Tuesday and Amesbury on Wednesday. Today (May 11) they host Manchester-Essex at 3:30 p.m. and they’ll host Swampscott on Friday at 3:45 p.m. Next Monday they travel to Pentucket for a 3:30 p.m. match.
