NORTH READING — The Hornets boys’ tennis team took on the Lynnfield Pioneers for the second time this season last Thursday.

North Reading pushed three matches to three sets this time around but unfortunately was defeated 4-1.

The lone bright spot was at first doubles, with the new pairing of senior captain Joe Fitzgerald and sophomore Trevor Wilson who pulled out a thrilling three-set win. After losing the first set 6-3, Wilson and Fitzgerald eked out the second 7-5. The third set was a clinic though, as Wilson and Fitzgerald took it 6-2.

Coach Mark Bisognano commented on the new first doubles pairing. “We stumbled on to this pairing at the CAL Open where they finished in second place in the first doubles flight. It’s proving to be a very dynamic pairing that’s been real good for both of them,” he said.

At second doubles there was another new pairing. Junior captain Brett Allan and freshman Mateo Florez won the first set 7-6 in an epic 10-8 tiebreak. But the final two sets went to their opponents who took the match 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.

At first singles sophomore Ryan Landers lost in three sets. Landers took the first set in a thrilling tie break, 7-6, but unfortunately dropped the final two sets 6-2, 6-2.

Sophomore Mike Tyrrell took on the recently crowned CAL Open champion at third singles, Colin Lamusta, and fell 6-2, 6-2.

At second singles sophomore Seth Hemley paired up against the second singles runner-up at the CAL Open, Arlex Correa, and was defeated 6-1, 6-1.
