LYNNFIELD — The volleyball team compiled a .500 record last week, improving the Pioneers’ overall record to 11-3.

The Pioneers began last week dismantling Masconomet 3-0 Oct. 5. The locals’ victory over the Chieftains enabled the Pioneers to win the Cape Ann League title once again.

Lynnfield secured an impressive 25-16 victory over Masco during the first set. The locals kept rolling during the second set and defeated the Chieftains 25-16. The Pioneers pounded Masco 25-8 during the third set.

Senior captain Olivia Pascucci led the Pioneers with 10 kills, 10 digs and one ace. Senior Katie Nugent had 10 kills, two digs and an ace. Freshman Melissa Morelli finished with 16 assists, five digs, four aces and two kills.

Senior Laura Mucci finished with eight assists, one dig, one ace and one kill. Junior Emory Caswell had one kill and one block. Junior Maxine Boyle finished with one kill.

Lynnfield’s victory over Masco was held simultaneously as the Pioneers’ annual Dig Pink fundraiser, which supports the Side-Out Foundation. The Side-Out Foundation raises funds for breast cancer research with the goal of finding a cure.

Each October, the Side-Out Foundation holds Dig Pink events across the country that brings volleyball players together to raise funds for breast cancer research. During this year’s fundraiser, the Pioneers held their annual bake sale and had basket drawings and raffles. The Pioneers also auctioned off a trip to Nantucket to raise funds for the organization. A number of local businesses, particularly MarketStreet businesses, donated to the fundraiser.

Additionally, the Pioneers and Chieftains each wore pink jerseys to raise breast cancer awareness.

Knights prevail again

The Pioneers fell 3-2 to North Andover on Oct. 7. North Andover defeated the locals 3-1 Sept. 27.
