METHUEN — The Lynnfield-North Reading co-op wrestling team went 3-2 during a super quad meet at Methuen High School on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The Black and Gold (13-12) began the meet defeating Waltham 48-18.

Senior captain Timmy Leggett (132 lbs.) pinned his opponent at 2:30. Senior captain Stuart Glover (138 lbs.) brought his counterpart to the ground at 1:30. Junior Nik Marotta (160 lbs.) won his match by fall at 1:37.

Senior Dan Ryan (170 lbs.) pinned his counterpart at 2:47. Senior Aidan Carucci (195 lbs.) brought his opponent to the ground at 1:50. Senior Brandon Ouellette (220 lbs.) won his match by fall in 28 seconds. Sophomore Ryan McCullough (152 lbs.) and senior Cam Randazzo (145 lbs.) won their respective matches by forfeit.

“It’s always nice to start the day of a super quad with a win, especially knowing that there are four more matches ahead,” said Black and Gold head coach Craig Stone.

The Black and Gold kept rolling and defeated Quabbin 24-18.

Senior captain Sean McCullough (182 lbs) pinned his opponent in 55 seconds. Ouellette (220 lbs.) brought his counterpart to the ground in 27 seconds. Glover (138 lbs.) and Randazzo (145 lbs.) won their respective matches by forfeit.

“Quabbin was only able to fill five weight classes,” said Stone. “Hopefully, they will be able to build back their program. They were one of the top teams in Division 3 West in years past.”

The Black and Gold fell 41-28 to St. John’s of Shrewsbury.

Junior Christian Real-Costa (120 lbs.) pinned his opponent at 1:40. Ryan McCullough (152 lbs.) defeated his opponent by fall at 2:50. Marotta (160 lbs.) won his match by a 15-4 major decision.

Senior Giovanni Colucciello (182 lbs.) brought his opponent to the ground at five minutes. Senior Greg Camier (220 lbs.) won his match by forfeit.

“We did not match up well with SJS, as our three captains, Leggett, Glover and Sean McCullough, all lost matches,” said Stone. “However, we still managed to win five bouts and score more team points against them then we did last year. Our captains have been carrying us through the season and it was good to see their teammates step up.”

The Black and Gold defeated Canton 54-21 during the super quad meet.

Leggett (132 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 31 seconds. Glover (138 lbs.) brought his counterpart to the ground in 55 seconds. Randazzo (145 lbs.) won his match by fall at 1:21. Ryan McCullough (152 lbs.) pinned his opponent at 1:11.

Marotta (170 lbs.) won his match by fall at 4:23. Sean McCullough (182 lbs.) pinned his counterpart in 21 seconds. Carucci (195 lbs.) brought his opponent to the ground in 28 seconds. Ouellette (220 lbs.) took down his challenger in 16 seconds. Camier (285 lbs.) pinned his counterpart in 44 seconds.”

“LNR bounced back after a tough loss to SJS,” said Stone. “We won nine out of 14 matches. It was a great team win. We lost to Canton last year.”

The Black and Gold concluded the super quad meet by falling 42-24 to Methuen.

Leggett (132 lbs.) pinned his opponent at 1:36. Randazzo (145 lbs.) took down his challenger at 1:35. Marotta (160 lbs.) won his match by fall at 1:06. Sean McCullough (182 lbs.) pinned his counterpart in 34 seconds.

“Methuen is one of the top 20 teams in the state,” said Stone. “It was a tough way to end the day, but we were in the match individually and collectively, and that’s what counts.”

Upcoming matches

The Black and Gold hosts Georgetown-Ipswich on Wednesday, Jan. 29, taking place at 6:30 p.m. at Lynnfield High School. LNR will host Concord-Carlisle on Wednesday, Feb. 5, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at LHS.
