FRANKLIN — The Lynnfield High boys’ hockey team wrapped up the regular season last Friday afternoon as they tied host Medfield, 3-3, at the Pirelli Rink in Franklin. With that result, the Pioneers ended the regular season at 12-5-3 overall.

After a scoreless first period, Tyler Murphy scored on the power play 1:03 into the second. Joey Mack and George DeRoche both assisted. Midway through the second, Murphy scored another power-play goal to make it 2-0. DeRoche and Jaret Simpson assisted on that tally.

Medfield got on the scoreboard late in the second to cut the lead to one heading into the third.

In the third, the Warriors scored back-to-back goals to take their first lead.

THE PIONEER DYNAMIC DUO of Tyler Murphy (9) and George DeRoche (10) got to celebrate plenty more goals during their final two games of the season. However, Murphy came through again scoring his third power-play goal of the day to get the hat trick which was his first one this year.

“He has been big for us all year,” said Pioneers head coach Jon Gardner, about Murphy. “He is very physical around the net.”

Medfield outshot the Pioneers on net, 24-21, as Lynnfield goalie Aidan Kelly made 21 saves to go to 12-5-3.

Top Gloucester, 3-1

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, the Pioneers won at Gloucester, 3-1, at the Talbot Rink.

Cooper Marengi scored early in the first period with 10:52 remaining assisted by Murphy, but the Fishermen scored just 35 seconds later.

Murphy scored the eventual game-winning goal one minute into the third. With a little under three minutes left in the game, DeRoche scored the insurance goal assisted by Marengi and Murphy.

“We were able to take advantage of the power play,” said Gardner.

Lynnfield outshot the Fishermen, 20-18 as Kelly made 17 stops.

On Tuesday night, the Pioneers took on Wilmington in the first round of the Division 2 North state tournament at Ryan Arena in Watertown (results not available at press time).

If they won that game, they would take on the winner of the Winthrop-Beverly game on Friday at the O’Brien Rink in Woburn in the quarterfinal round (starting time unknown at press time).
