PEABODY — The Lynnfield High boys’ hockey team rolled over guest Rockport, 6-1, on Monday afternoon at the McVann-O’Keefe rink in Peabody.
With that win, the Pioneers improved to 3-3 overall as they won their second consecutive game.
Owen Considine was the story of this game as the senior captain notched his third hat trick of the year.
“He has been shouldering the offensive workload this year,” said Pioneers head coach Jon Gardner.
Lucas Deraps found the back of the Vikings net twice while the other goal was scored by Nick Kelter.
Lynnfield led wire-to-wire as they were up, 3-0, after the first period and, 3-1, after the second stanza.
Lynnfield out-shot the Vikings on goal 44-25, as Pioneer goalie Angelo Covino made 24 saves to go to 1-2 in net.
Rockport fell to 2-5 with the loss.
On New Year’s Day, the Pioneers beat visiting Gloucester, 6-2, in a non-league game.
With the scored knotted at one after the opening period, the Pioneers erupted for four goals in the second period to go up 5-1.
“We did a good job of cashing in our chances in that period,” said Gardner.
Considine scored three times in this game as well. Kelter scored twice while Deraps had the other tally.
The Fishermen actually out-shot the Pioneers on net, 28-20, as goalie Mike Marenghi made 26 stops to go to 2-1.
On Dec. 27, the Pioneers lost, 6-2, to Hanover in the consolation game of the Giordano Christmas Classic at the Murphy Memorial Rink in South Boston.
“They are a good team but were missing several players due to injury including Owen who was out with the flu,” explained Gardner.
Kelter and Deraps had the two Lynnfield goals in that game.
In the first game of the tournament on the 26th, Lynnfield was doubled up by Winthrop 4-2.
Things started off well as the Pioneers led 2-0 going into the second period.
However, the wheels fell off in the second as the Vikings scored four times in a 2:30 span.
Deraps and Andrew Carbone had the two Pioneer goals in that game.
Winthrop ended up losing, 3-0, to the host school, Boston Latin, in the championship game.
