LYNNFIELD — On Sept. 12, the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team hammered guest Georgetown by a final of 5-1. The Pioneers, who led, 2-1 at the half, broke the game open in the second stanza scoring three times.
“We didn’t play well in the first half,” admitted Pioneers head coach Brent Munroe. “We ended up playing much better in the second half.”
Lynnfield scored the game’s first two goals. Rocco Scenna had the first tally two minutes in while Scenna then assisted on Brendan Reilly’s goal with eight minutes remaining to make it 2-0.
The Royals cut the lead to one with just under two minutes left in the opening half.
Lynnfield increased the lead to two three minutes into the second half as Joel Anthony scored with Reilly assisting.
Reilly then netted his second goal of the afternoon as the sophomore scored with 15 minutes left in the game. Trevor Maddocks assisted.
Maddock’s brother, Tyler, then had the final goal four minutes later with David Glynn assisting.
Dino Gesamondo got his first win of the season in net as the 11th-grader only had to make one save.
Lynnfield improved to 4-0 overall and in the Cape Ann League with the victory.
On Sept. 10, the Pioneers traveled to Danvers and beat host Essex Tech 3-1.
“That game was hard- fought and tight the entire way,” said Munroe. “They are much improved from last year.”
Ollie Morgan scored on a breakaway for the first goal 18 minutes in assisted by Scenna.
The Hawks tied it six minutes later scoring off a corner kick.
Anthony scored the eventual game-winning goal 12 minutes into the second half with Scenna assisting again.
Scenna then had the final goal with 18 minutes remaining in the game assisted by Tyler Maddocks.
“Rocco had a great game not only scoring and assisting but the way he played in the middle of the field as well,” stated Munroe.
Kelan Cardinal was the goalkeeper in this game as he improved to 3-0 in net making seven stops.
The defending Division 4 state champions will face its toughest test so far on Sept. 19 as they host rival North Reading at 6 p.m.
