NEWBURYPORT — The Lynnfield High boys’ tennis team stayed perfect on May 26 as they blanked host Newburyport 5-0 on a hot, humid day. With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 6-0.

“We came in with a competitive mindset,” said Pioneers head coach Joe Dunn. “Newburyport had some tough players so we knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”

The Clippers fell to 4-3 with the defeat.

Junior co-captain Harrison Luba won at first singles, 6-0, 6-1 while second singles player, senior co-captain Jamil Khodr, won 6-0, 6-1, as well. At third singles, freshman Dan Levin won 6-0, 6-1 to go to 6-0 this spring.

In doubles action, the first team of juniors Dave Kasdon and Jason Yang won 6-3, 6-1, while the second team of seniors Jack Zalvan and Connor Sokop won 6-3, 6-3.

For Zalvan and Sokop it was their season debut.

Jamil Khodr, Levin and the team of Kasdon and Yang are all 6-0 this season while Luba is 5-1.

On May 28, the Pioneers started their match at Ipswich but then the rains came and the match was made up on June 1 (results not available at press time).

Their home match against Amesbury on Memorial Day was also rained out and no makeup date has been made.

The next match for the Pioneers will be on June 8 as they host North Reading at Lynnfield Middle School. That match will start at 4 p.m.

Lynnfield is looking for the season sweep over the Hornets as they won 5-0 in the season opener on May 10 at North Reading.
