LYNNFIELD — High school fall sports received the green light as the town went yellow last week, out of the red in the state’s Department of Public of Health’s weekly COVID-19 report.

Lynnfield had until this week’s report to get out of the red for sports to be allowed this fall, otherwise they would have been required to postpone their season.

Instead, the Pioneers essentially got pushed back one week compared with the rest of the Cape Ann League. The other 10 schools in the CAL started practice on Sept. 18. Lynnfield got the nod on Sept. 24. Most of the six Lynnfield teams competing this fall will spend the week practicing. The golf team will start their season against North Reading on Thursday.

Most CAL schools will start playing soccer and field hockey games either this week or this weekend. The Pioneers were pushed back a few days as the field hockey, girls’ soccer and boys’ soccer teams will start on Oct. 8 against Manchester-Essex. The soccer and field hockey teams will join the rest of the league in playing a 10-game schedule. Golf will play eight matches and cross country will have five races.
