LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High girls’ basketball team recorded their biggest win of the season on Senior Night Monday evening as they stomped visiting Rockport by a final of 71-16. With that win, the Pioneers improved to 5-5 with one game remaining in the regular season.
“It was a mismatch,” admitted Pioneers’ first year head coach Jeannie Cavallaro, as the Vikings are a lower division than the Pioneers. “They sat in a zone and we just couldn’t miss.”
The Pioneers led 39-12 at the break as they outscored the Vikings, 32-4, in the second half.
Senior co-captain Caroline Waisnor had a monster night with 26 points including a career-high eight 3-pointers. Fellow senior co-captain Ava Buonfiglio poured in 17 while Abby Adamo added 10.
Buonfiglio led the team in redounds with 11 as she recorded a double-double.
After the game, the three Pioneer seniors Waisnor, Buonfiglio and Grace Klonsky were honored.
On Feb. 3, the news was not as good as the Pioneers lost 31-28 at home to Hamilton-Wenham. The 28 points was a season-low.
“They also played zone but we couldn’t shoot the ball well,” said Cavallaro. “Their zone was much more active that Rockport’s.”
Lynnfield led this one 18-15 at the half. The Generals took the lead midway through the fourth quarter as the Pioneers were able to only muster 10 points in the second half.
Buonfiglio had 10 points while Adamo chipped in six.
On Feb. 10, the Pioneers get another shot against Hamilton-Wenham. Tip-off is at 5:45 p.m.
Next week the Cape Ann League will hold its playoffs as the top four schools in each division (Kinney and Baker) will qualify. The fourth seed will play the top seed while the second seed will play the third seed.
All four of those games are next Wednesday. The winners will then play in the championship games on Feb. 19.
