LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team is firing on all cylinders with the Division 4 state tournament just around the corner.
Lynnfield (11-2-2) began last week defeating rival North Reading 1-0 on Oct. 15.
The first half was a defensive battle between the Pioneers and Hornets, and the contest was tied 0-0 at halftime.
Sophomore midfielder/forward Kaylee Barrett scored the game-winning goal after receiving a pass from sophomore midfielder Giada Antidormi with 24 minutes remaining in the game.
“Kaylee came up big scoring that goal,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont. “It was a really nice goal.”
Senior Morgan Hubbard started in net and finished with four saves.
Vermont said senior captain Ariana Guarracino, sophomore Avery Haney, sophomore Jordan Calichman and sophomore Adriana Regitano played great defensive games for the Pioneers.
“Our defense played really well,” said Vermont.
Vermont praised the Pioneers’ play against the Hornets. He recalled that North Reading previously defeated Lynnfield 2-0 last month.
“North Reading was undefeated,” said Vermont. “They are a great team that is very strong and very fast. It was a great team win. The girls worked hard and we were physical. We played a great game.”
Defeats Rockport
The Pioneers cruised past Rockport 5-0 during Senior Night on Oct. 19.
Senior captain/midfielder Emma Rose scored her first goal of the contest four minutes into the first half.
Senior captain/forward Bella Carroll nailed a shot 16 minutes into the opening frame. Rose had the assist off of a corner kick.
Rose scored her second goal of the game 24 minutes into the first half after receiving a pass from Carroll.
With two minutes remaining before halftime, Rose found the back of the net to finish with the hat trick. Antidormi had the assist.
“It was Emma’s first hat trick of the season,” said Vermont. “She played a great game.”
Carroll scored her second goal five minutes into the second half after receiving a pass from junior midfielder Hannah Ozanian.
“Bella did a nice job up top,” said Vermont.
Freshman Sabrina Hayman tallied two saves in net against the Vikings.
The Pioneers honored Rose, Carroll, Guarracino, senior captain/midfielder Clara Caulfield, Hubbard, senior defender/midfielder Ella Hayman, senior defender Lily Rocco and senior midfielder Katie Connelly and their families during the annual Senior Night ceremony during halftime.
“Our seniors played a great game,” said Vermont. “Ariana, Ella and Lily played great defensive games. Emma, Clara, Morgan and Katie played well in the midfield, and Bella played well upfront. It was a great night for our seniors. The parents did a great job organizing the ceremony so we could honor our seniors.”
Vermont said Ozanian, junior forward Ava Cook and junior midfielder Alex Schmidt played well against Rockport.
