LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team is headed back to the Division 3 North state tournament.

“It’s a great achievement,” said head coach Mark Vermont. “We always set a goal of making the tournament at the beginning of the season, and it’s great the girls were able to accomplish that goal.”

The Pioneers (10-2-1) began last week defeating Triton 3-0 on Oct. 9.

Junior Molly Ozanian scored the Pioneers’ first goal off a corner kick nine minutes into the first half. Sophomore Ashley Mitchell had the assist.

Senior captain Emma Montanile gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead after she found the back of the net with 17 minutes remaining in the first half.

Junior Amberly McCarter had four saves in net against the Vikings.

Vermont said Ozanian, captain Liz Sykes, sophomore Lauren Braconnier and sophomore Lauren Mitchell played well defensively against Triton.

“Our defense did a nice job,” said Vermont.

Vermont said the Pioneers played a strong game against the Vikings.

“We moved the ball really well,” said Vermont. “I was pleased with how our midfield played. Our forwards seem to be finding each other.”

Stings North Reading

The Pioneers defeated rival North Reading 2-0 on Oct. 11.

Montanile scored the locals’ first goal 11 minutes before halftime. Ferrante had the assist.

Captain Tori Morelli found the back of the net 10 minutes into the second half, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Ferrante was credited with the assist.

“It was a great goal,” said Vermont. “Tori had a nice game.”

Vermont said Ferrante played well against the struggling Hornets.

“Anna is doing a really nice job,” said Vermont. “She is very composed on the ball. She knows how to hold people off and find players.”

McCarter tallied five saves between the pipes.

Vermont said the Pioneers played well against North Reading.

“It’s always a great game between North Reading and Lynnfield,” said Vermont. “We were ready for it. We had a lot of shots and opportunities against them.”
