LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team is headed back to the Division 3 state tournament after the Pioneers concluded last week with two wins and a tie.

The Pioneers (9-4-4) dismantled Wayland 3-0 on Oct. 23.

Freshman midfielder Emma Rose scored her seventh goal of the season after nailing a shot with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Freshman forward Bella Carroll had the assist.

“It was a nice goal,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont.

Sophomore midfielder Ally Sykes gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead after she scored on a free kick two minutes before halftime.

Freshman midfielder Clara Caulfield scored Lynnfield’s final goal 15 minutes into the second half after she received a pass from Rose.

Senior captain Sam Bunar recorded seven saves in net against Wayland.

Vermont said Rose, Caulfield, Carroll, Sykes and senior defender Marissa Corvi played very well against Wayland.

“Clara and Emma both played a great game,” said Vermont. “They are good players who have good composure. Bella has been doing a nice job and is strong on the ball. Ally played a really good game. Marissa is our center-back, and she has been playing every minute of every game.”

Stings Manchester-Essex

The Pioneers ruined Manchester-Essex’s Senior Night by shutting out the Hornets 4-0 on Oct. 21.

Carroll scored Lynnfield’s first goal 24 minutes into the game on a breakaway. Vermont said sophomore forward Keely Briggs got the assist after she deflected a potential Manchester-Essex shot that was about to go in. Briggs then volleyed the ball to Carroll.

“Keely came up big for us,” said Vermont. “Bella was able to beat two defenders and the goalie. It was a backbreaking play.”

Senior midfielder Anna Radulski found the back of the net seven minutes into the second half. Sykes had the assist after completing the corner kick.

The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead after Rose scored a goal a minute after Radulski scored. Senior defender Abby Adamo had the assist.

Sykes scored Lynnfield’s final goal on a free kick with four minutes remaining in the game.

“Ally has been doing a nice job in the midfield for us,” said Vermont.

Bunar tallied four saves in the cage against the Hornets.

Vermont commended the Pioneers’ performance against Manchester-Essex.

“We played well against a solid Manchester-Essex team,” said Vermont.

Ties North Reading

The Pioneers began last week tying archrival North Reading 0-0 on Oct. 19.

Bunar recorded eight saves in net against the Hornets.

“Sam played a good game,” said Vermont.

Vermont noted most of the contest against the Hornets was played in the midfield.

“It’s always a tough game whenever we play North Reading,” said Vermont. “We could have possessed the ball better, but we played pretty well. The tie gave us the point we needed to make the state tournament.”

Tourney pairings loom

The Pioneers faced Pentucket on Monday, Oct. 25, taking place after deadline. The MIAA will be releasing the Division 3 state tournament brackets next week.
