LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team concluded last week with a tie and a loss.

Lynnfield (3-2-1) began last week tying Hamilton-Wenham 2-2 on Sept. 17.

Senior captain/midfielder Emma Rose gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game. Sophomore forward/midfielder Kaylee Barrett had the assist.

Hamilton-Wenham tied the game 1-1 after finding the back of the net with six minutes remaining in the first half.

The Generals buried a shot with three minutes remaining in the opening frame, which gave Hamilton-Wenham a 2-1 lead at the break.

Undaunted, Rose tied the game 2-2 after scoring off of a corner kick two minutes into the second half.

“Emma played a great game,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont. “She brought a lot of intensity and helped bring us back.”

Sophomore goalie Victor Minor tallied five saves in net against the Generals.

The Pioneers’ contest against Hamilton-Wenham was a rematch of last year’s Division 4 Elite Eight. Lynnfield won that contest 4-0, which enabled the Pioneers to advance to the Final Four.

“Hamilton-Wenham is a great squad that is well-coached,” said Vermont. “We knew it was going to be a battle and we had to fight. We had some opportunities and Hamilton-Wenham had some opportunities. It was a great back-and-fourth game.”

Stung by Hornets

The Pioneers fell 2-0 to archrival North Reading on Sept. 19.

North Reading scored its first goal 18 minutes into the game and took a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead after North Reading scored with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.

Vermont said sophomore midfielder/defender Sofia Giardina played very well against the Hornets.

“Sofia played a great game defensively against North Reading,” said Vermont. “She did a great job in the back.”

Vermont said sophomore defender Jordan Calichman also played well.

“Jordan did a really nice job,” said Vermont. “She had good composure and made good decisions.”

Minor tallied 10 saves in the cage against North Reading.

Vermont said the Pioneers played hard against the Hornets.

“North Reading is a great team that is well-coached,” said Vermont. “We had good energy and worked hard, but we just needed to execute better.”

Upcoming games

The Pioneers faced Pentucket on Tuesday, Sept. 24, taking place after deadline. Lynnfield travels to Ipswich on Thursday, Sept. 26, beginning at 4 p.m.
