Lifelong resident worked at St. Mary’s

MELROSE — Mary Christine O’Brien, 61, passed away suddenly at her home in Melrose, on Friday, Sept. 12.

Mary was born in Melrose on Nov. 8, 1952, was raised in Melrose and graduated from St. Mary Grammar School. She also attended Melrose High School. She has been a lifelong resident of Melrose and a member of St. Mary Church in Melrose, where she worked as the cook at the rectory for many years.

Mary had a heart of gold, was always there to help those family and friends in need, took wonderful care of her parents throughout their lives and would give you the shirt off her back.

She was a lover of animals, a voracious reader and history buff and a wonderful cook.

Mary and her mother Anne O’Brien cooked for the residents of the Levi Gould retirement Home in Melrose for many years.

She was the loving mother of Daniel S. O’Brien and Deborah of Springfield. She was the caring daughter of the late Francis B. and Anne (O’Keefe) O’Brien. She was the cherished sister of Paula Govostes and her late husband Diamond of Everett, John J. O’ Brien and his wife Carol of Malden, Timothy J. O’Brien and his wife Sheri of Holliston, James B. O’Brien and his late wife Terri of Melrose and Andrea L. Coleman and her husband Dan of Saugus. She was the loving niece of Patricia and Ed Devine, Christopher O’Keefe and his partner Earl, Ellen O’Keefe and Joan O’Keefe. She was the best friend of Joni (Reggio) Nigro. She was the loving aunt of numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday, Sept.17, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Church, Herbert Street, Melrose, at 10:30 a.m.

Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
