Careyobit-webPEABODY — Mary Virginia (Mahoney) Carey, 88, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, died on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

She was the beloved wife of the late William T. Carey, also of Peabody and formerly of Wakefield.

Mrs. Carey was the daughter of the late Helen and Charles Mahoney. Mary grew up in Medford, graduated from Medford High School and attended Regis College.

She was married to William for 64 years and was the mother to six children. She leaves Denise Appleman and her husband Jay of Palm Harbor, Florida, Ruthann Strong and her husband Chuck of Townsend, Janet Robichaud and her husband William of Reading, Joan Hall and her husband Donn of Bloomington, Indiana, Brian Carey and his wife Lisa of Belmont, and the late John Carey of Wakefield. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She worked as a secretary at the Warren School in Wakefield.

Mary was an avid quilter and doll maker, an art she enjoyed for many years.

A four-time cancer survivor, she spent many hours quilting baby blankets for young infants also struggling with illness.

She and Bill spent 18 years retired in West Barnstable on Cape Cod before moving to Brooksby Village.

Relatives and friends are invited to the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 a.m.

Interment in Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
