Squeak Past Generals, 2–1

NORTH READING — The Lady Hornets extended their winning streak to seven games with a great 2–1 victory over the CAL Baker Division leading Hamilton–Wenham Generals on October 11. Juniors Karlie Vesey and Meredith Griffin scored for North Reading.

The first half got off to a great start for the Hornets. In the 7th minute Vesey collected a nice pass from senior Marissa Zarella in the box, looped around a Generals defender and ripped a shot inside the far post for the goal. North Reading continued to control the rest of the first half but missed on the rest of their scoring opportunities and were only up 1–0 at halftime.

The Generals made the Hornets pay for the missed opportunities early in the second half. In the 47th minute Hamilton–Wenham tied it up when an attempted clear by North Reading on a through ball deflected right to a General for an easy finish.

The goal didn’t faze the Hornets and in the 59th minute they retook the lead. On the play senior Jessica Muise sent in a beautiful ball on a free kick that the Hamilton–Wenham goalie punched right to Griffin who headed the ball into the open cage. The goal proved enough as senior Katerina Hassapis made two nice saves in the waning minutes to seal the superb victory.

Winning Streak Snapped by Masco

The Masconomet Chieftains snapped the Hornets seven game winning streak with their 2–0 victory on Thursday.

Masco scored a goal in both the first and second half. It’s the Chieftains second win over North Reading this season outscoring the Hornets 5–0.
