Shut down Andre Chiefs in 4-1 triumph

MELROSE — It took several innings for the Melrose Americans to get going offensively, but once they did they went on to score enough runs to defeat the Andre Chiefs by a 4-1 score on Wednesday, June 29 at Morelli Field in an Intercity League contest.

Trailing 1-0 after the Chiefs plated a run in the third inning, Melrose scored two runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to earn its fourth victory of the season.

The Americans are 5-7-1 after 13 games and the league leading Chiefs fell to 10-3-1 after 14 contests.

Dillon Corliss (1-1) went six innings to earn the win. The right-hander gave up one run on four hits while striking out four and walking three.

Zack Kirby pitched an inning and earned his first save. He surrendered one hit while striking out three and walking one.

Mitchell Clegg (2-1) went the distance for the Andre Chiefs and yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out six and walking two. He also hit a batter.

Tom Petry and Mike LaRovere each had two hits to lead the Americans. Isaiah Berg, Austin Masel and Zeke Berg each had one hit. Zeke Berg’s hit was a double.

Isaiah Berg, Zeke Berg, Petry and LaRovere each crossed the plate once. Masel knocked in two runs, while Petry had one RBI.

Zeke Berg, Petry and LaRovere each stole a base as well. Masel and John Jennings each drew a walk by Clegg.

The Chiefs had five hits total with Bill Mottram getting two of them. Mike Burgoyne, Jordan Pallazola and Ryan Sonberg each had one hit.

Burgoyne’s hit was a solo home run in the third inning. Pallazola also had an extra base hit with a double and Mike Barbarti stole a base.

Pallazola and Sonberg drew the two walks given up by Melrose pitching.

The Americans returned from the Fourth of July break and faced the Reading Bulldogs on Wednesday, July 6 (post deadline) at 7:30 p.m. at Morelli Field. Melrose takes on the Wakefield Merchants on Friday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Morelli Field.
