MELROSE—Having to adjust to a brand new course was no problem for the MHS boys cross country team, who kicked off their season on Sept. 10 at their new home base at Pine Banks Park and sprinted to victory against Winchester in a squeaker, 28-29.

This year, they are being guided by a new coach in Alexander DeRosa, who is stepping in for legendary coach Kevin Allison this season.

DeRosa’s distance running career started freshman year at Saugus High School and carried into college, where he ran at Salem State University. “My running career was cut short due to injury, and only after the fact did I understand where I failed to protect myself and ensure a long, healthy career,” he says. “I’m passionate about teaching young athletes what I wish I had known when I was in their place, so that they can enjoy their sport for life.”

Now he can apply that at Melrose, who enjoyed their strong victory on Tuesday thanks to senior captain Caleb Barnes, who won the race overall in 16:19, nearly a minute clear of second place.

“Every spot counted, as it was a very tight race, and our athletes gave every ounce of their effort to squeak out the victory,” reports DeRosa.

“Overall, this team looks strong and competitive this season. They clearly worked hard over the summer and put in their miles.”
Leading the team of 28 athletes are senior captains Caleb Barnes, Jonah Tully, and Andre Bancu. Ideally they’d like to lead the team to a Middlesex League title, but according to the coach, creating team unity is a priority.

“We want to create a unified team culture and win the meets that we’re capable of winning,” says DeRosa. “The Middlesex League looks competitive.”

Melrose will host Watertown on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.
