MELROSE — Please join the the Melrose Historical Commission for a walking tour of the downtown Melrose historic district on Sunday, September 8 (the day of the Victorian Fair) at 1 p.m.

The tour will begin at the Essex Street doors of City Hall and last about one hour. The tour will tell the story of Main Street’s extraordinary Victorian development, relating the history and architecture of the great public buildings and churches in the block south of East and West Emerson Streets, the efforts to preserve that history in the late 20th century, and current attempts to thwart those protections.

At the end of the tour, donations will be collected. Those who cannot take the tour are invited to visit the Commission’s booth, where they will be able to ask questions, learn from an interactive display on legal protections for historic buildings in the city, take an architectural scavenger hunt, and buy a ticket for our raffle prize, a historical map of the city generously donated by Miter Biter.

Questions about the tour can be sent to info@melrosehistory.org
