NEWBURYPORT—The Melrose Red Raider hockey team fought a competitive game against Triton (3-9) on Monday, Jan. 31 at Graf Arena in Newburyport but ultimately fell to the Vikings, 3-1.

With a few weeks left in the regular season, Melrose hopes to collect some wins to increase their chances of qualifying for post season via power rankings. Melrose is currently ranked 28th out of 41 Div. 2 teams. This could change in the coming weeks and Melrose has six games left on the schedule to get things done.

Melrose and Triton battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the first and the Red Raiders hit the scoreboard first thanks to senior captain TJ Sullivan, who scored past Viking goalie Gavin Marengi early in the second to put the Red Raiders up 1-0. But later in the period, Triton’s Quinn Fidler scored to tie things up 1-1.

That score would hold as the two teams engaged in a dogfight in the final frame with solid Melrose goaltending by Joe Smith, and with just 40 seconds left Triton’s Connor Rumph found the net to give the Vikings a critical 2-1 advantage.

With little time left and Melrose having pulled their goalie, Triton dumped an empty-netter past the buzzer to finish the job 3-1.

Next up, Melrose will travel to Ryan Arena in Watertown on Wednesday (post deadline) before battling rival Wakefield at Stoneham Arena at 6 p.m. on Saturday night.

Stay tuned.
