Melrose clinches a share of league title

BURLINGTON—The Melrose High girl’s indoor track team has earned another share of the ML Freedom League and remain unbeaten at 4-0 going into their final weekend of play this Saturday. They continued their flawless season with a solid win over Burlington last Saturday at Burlington High. 

Melrose is now poised to win their third straight league title when they face Wakefield (2-2) on the road on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at Beasley Field in Wakefield.  

Thanks to Melrose’s 67-33 win over rival Burlington on Saturday, they have clinched what is their third straight league title. The victory was a solid team effort and Melrose had great success in many events.

Melrose saw action in the 55 hurdles from Kaiya Thompson, Grace Donohue, Megan Bidgood, Julia McAree, Leena Abraou, Mollie Lytje. Melrose saw their best time in the event from from Grace Donohue. The the 55 meter,  Melrose competed Hailey Keegan (first place) and Adriana Centrella. Melrose took the one mile behind the work of Charlotte Tysall and Lilian Lawlor, with Tysall taking the top spot with a time of 5:47. 

Julia McAree swept the field in the high jump with a reach of 4’8.Teammate Mollie Lytje placed third. Melrose also swept the first three spots in the shot put. 

Melrose sent eight runners to the 600, with Sydney Kroon placing second. Other Melrose athletes running the event were Ella Flemming, Jaya Karamcheti, Adeline Lawlor, Darby Thompson, Kate McAndrew and Rachel Brooks. In the 1000, Melrose saw good runs from Ava Picone, Chloe Orcutt and Ellie Sweeney. Melrose took the second and third sports in the 200 behind the work of Alyssa Champagne, Katie Sikkema, Meghan Radzik and Sofia Totino. Melrose’s 4×200 relay team was successful with a first place finish of 1:48, thanks to laps by Alyssa Champagne, Adriana Centrella, Grace Donohue and Hailey Keegan. Coming into this weekend, Melrose will undoubtedly focus on earning one more clean sweep of the league, repeating the efforts of last winter. Wakefield at 2-2, may not be unbeaten but will certainly be challenging.  Stay tuned.
