MELROSE — With the mental health of kids of paramount concern, the School Committee this week created an administrative post to help.

The director of Social Emotional Learning will deal with youths from pre-Kindergarten age to post-graduate. The position-holder will be a member of the district’s leadership team.

“Informed by current research and best practices in SEL, culturally responsive teaching, and restorative practices, the Director of Social Emotional Learning will build systems and structures that lead to the successful development, implementation, and evaluation of an integrated approach to social emotional learning, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) routines and management, and other systems designed to support the whole child,” according to information supplied to the School Committee. This job is a full-year position.

The director of Social Emotional Learning will report to the assistant superintendent for Teaching and Learning.

Candidates for the post must have qualifications like:

• Supervisor/Director license or other DESE administrative license

• A Master’s Degree in an appropriate discipline(s)

• At least five years’ experience in teaching content area and instructional leadership

• Strong familiarity with the appropriate state and national curriculum standards in the associated discipline(s)

• Demonstrated skills and past experience in instruction, management, planning, decision-making, problem-solving and interpersonal and community relations

• Successful completion of a background check

• Knowledgeable of practices for the integration of technology and its use for data analysis and professional collaboration

• Knowledge of the Massachusetts regulations and practices for educator evaluation

• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

According to available material, the SEL director’s responsibilities include examining the Social-Emotional Learning curriculum used by the district and its impact in terms of its cultural responsiveness, content, methodology, rubrics, grade placement, time allocation, and evaluation procedures; planning the overall organization or design of instruction to support social-emotional learning efforts in the district including the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Systems, SEL Multi-tiered Systems of Supports, and professional development efforts with a lens towards sustaining equitable and inclusive learning environments; coordinating the Social-Emotional Learning curriculum, PBIS implementation, and SEL Multi- tiered Systems of Supports and provide for alignment between school levels and across schools; developing and preparing courses of studies, outlines, curriculum materials, and instructional materials for use by teachers to support the integration of Social-Emotional Learning.

No salary for the position had been set as of Wednesday, the day after the School Committee approved the post.
