MELROSE — The School Committee has given educators $40,253,740 to run things during the 2022-23 academic year.

On Tuesday, the committee approved the schools’ budget for fiscal year 2023, which begins July 1. Of the total, the city would contribute $25,883,829; the school appropriation request is $25,946,518; offsets account for another $4.6 million and aid from the state (known as Chapter 70) come in at $9.6 million.

The request allows for the addition of an assistant principal at the Veterans Memorial Middle School, a middle school adjustment counselor and enough funding to create a full time director of Visual and Performing Arts.

The School Committee unanimously approved the spending package. The proposal will now move on to the City Council for review.
