Still remain 4-1 in ML Freedom League

MELROSE—The Melrose High girls’ soccer team has dropped their last few games this week against Middlesex League large teams and look to pick up some league wins this week when they face Wakefield and Burlington.

On Monday afternoon, Melrose was nipped, 1-0, by host Woburn. The Tanners scored the game’s lone goal in the 20th-minute of the first half as Nicole Gangi, the top scorer in the Middlesex League scored on a broken play.

“We played well but just couldn’t finish,” said Melrose head coach Rob Mahoney. “It was even territorial wide.”

With the defeat, Melrose’s record dipped to 5-7 overall and 5-6 in the Middlesex League. The Tanners, meanwhile, improved to 7-2-2.

Woburn is in Division 1 while Melrose is a Division 2 team.

The best chance for Melrose came with just over two minutes remaining in the game as they were rewarded a free kick from just outside the box. However, Abby Taylor’s shot was saved. Melrose goalkeeper Lilah Croach, made five saves in net.

Despite the fact that Gangi scored, Mahoney was pleased with the play of senior defender Alex Leeman who marked Gangi for most of the game.

The good news for Melrose is they are leading the Freedom League and are ranked 24th in the MIAA Div. 2 power rankings as the top 32 teams, at the end of the regular season, are automatically in the state tournament regardless of record.

Melrose’s next match is on Columbus Day morning as they visit Burlington. That match will start at 9 am.
