DANVERS—On Monday afternoon, the Melrose High softball team traveled to Tiggie Field in Danvers in a non-league game against Danvers High. Melrose lost 6-0, which represents the least amount of runs Melrose has given up this season.

“This was the best game we have played all year despite the score,” said Melrose assistant head coach Frank Sorrenti. “We made no errors and didn’t walk too many batters.”

The Falcons, a team out of the Northeastern Conference, scored single runs in the first and third innings as the broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. With the loss, Melrose remains searching for wins overall and the Falcons improve to 7-5.

Melrose’s Emi Judge went all six innings. She gave up two walks and struck out two.

“Emi was hitting her spots for the most part,” said Sorrenti, who was calling the pitches that game.

The Melrose offense had seven hits led by Sydney Bowles who went 2-3.

“She also did a good job in left field,” pointed out Sorrenti.

The other five hits were by Ava Viola, Anna Scalfani, Brynn Baker, Kate Stratford, Riley Jones and Sophie Brown.

On May 2nd, Melrose was rolled over by host Wakefield in a five-inning mercy-rule game. The Warriors ended up sweeping the season series. “We made three errors at bad times,” recalled Sorrenti. “They ended up scoring ten times in the fourth inning.”

Judge pitched the first two innings. Jones pitched the other two innings.

Melrose scored all six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Viola and Baker led the offense as each girl went 2-3 with one run batted in.

Strafford had a two-run single while Jones and Maggie Turner each had RBI singles.

Brown had the other Melrose hit as they finished with eight total.

At press time, Melrose had a narrow loss against Burlington on Tuesday by a score of 5-4, proving Melrose is capable of turning things around. They get that chance on May 13 when they visit Swampscott at 4:30 pm in a non-league game. They then return to Middlesex League action on May 16 as they host Watertown at Pine Banks.
