ARLINGTON—The Melrose High girls’ lacrosse team continued their winning ways with a gripping 11-10 win over Arlington on the road on Friday, May 3.

It improves the team to 5-3 with 8 games to go in the regular season. Power Rankings currently have them #18, making the likelihood of a post season strong.

Melrose enjoyed a collection of scorers over the day and a good performance by Sofia Hitchman at the net.

“Sophia saved us,” says Melrose head coach Alicia Geiter. “She held us in the game even during times we didn’t necessarily deserve it. She never wavered and had her teammates back through a relentless setting sun.”

Arlington, meanwhile, proved tough out of the gate. “They came out strong,” says the coach. “They were controlling the draw and it took us a really long time to get started. The girls put themselves in a pretty big hole that they needed to dig themselves out of. Arlington wasn’t loosing steam and continued to contest everything until the last seconds. It was a great comeback for sure. It was a collective effort to make that comeback.”

Melrose started out slow but launched a comeback. “Things didn’t change in our favor until the third quarter. We clawed our way back. We secured our lead in the forth and used the remaining minutes of the game to control possession.”

The coach hopes the team uses this team first mentality as they ride out the rest of the regular season. “The girls really started to work together and when that happens it’s magic. You can see a clear change in their body language and how they respond to things. We thrive when we set each other up and celebrate the little things.”

They host Wilmington on Friday at 4:15 p.m.
