Melrose Students to Participate in School Walkout on Wednesday

MELROSE — As part of a nationwide movement, Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (MVMMS) and Melrose High School students will have the opportunity to participate in a walkout on Wednesday in support of school safety and in remembrance of the tragedy that occurred in Parkland, Florida.

A National School Walkout is being organized by Women’s March Youth EMPOWER, which is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part on Wednesday, March 14. Participation in the walkout is not required, and staff will remain inside for those who choose not to participate.

At 10 a.m., middle and high school students will head outside for 17 minutes to honor the 17 lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14.

Students and staff at the elementary schools will center their efforts on promoting kindness. At 10 a.m., teachers will hold community circles and engage students in a 17-minute discussion about how to foster kindness and inclusivity in their daily lives. The activity is designed to help students develop empathy, along with social and self-awareness.

Superintendent Taymore states that the March 14 event also serves as an opportunity for students to learn about civic engagement and citizenship.

“We respect the rights of our students and faculty who wish to partake in this peaceful movement along with their counterparts across the country,” Superintendent Taymore said. “Our job at the Melrose Public Schools is to foster learning and development, and that occurs both inside and outside the classroom.”

The Melrose Public Schools support the efforts by students and staff to be thoughtful and engaged citizens and recognizes the importance of providing a safe and supportive environment where all members of the community feel welcomed, valued and respected.
