MELROSE — The Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church (MUUC) otherwise known as “the church across the street from the library,” welcomes Rhea Brown-Bright as the new Director of Lifespan Religious Education working with children, teens and adults.
Rhea was born and raised in Oklahoma, earning a B.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Divinity from Boston University School of Theology. Rhea is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. They worked previously for two years as a Director of Faith Formation in Dorchester and loves spending time with their cat, wife and friends. Rhea is passionate about the ways Unitarian Universalist values are lived out not only on Sundays, but in our everyday lives.
Rhea states, “I came to MUUC because of their passion for building a world that is better for every age. Their desire to support kids in their growth was clear to me from my first time talking with them. My hope is that we nurture a space for all ages where we feel connected not only to each other, but engage with our shared Unitarian Universalist values of justice, interdependence, generosity, love, pluralism and transformation with love at our center.”
MUUC has a longstanding history of providing children and youth with a safe and accepting environment in which to explore spirituality, support Unitarian Universalist values and learn about other world religions. Through worship, curricula, social justice projects and the experience of being part of a religious community, children and youth are encouraged to explore the mystery of the Divine and the awe and wonder of the natural world.
Working for social justice is especially important at MUUC. Youth have participated in the City Reach program in Boston which gives young people the opportunity to learn firsthand about homelessness from people who have experienced it. MUUC also participates in the community-wide MLK Day of Service in Melrose and the Bread of Life program in Malden which works to end hunger and homelessness.
Learn more about MUUC by visiting melroseuu.org or visit in person on a Sunday morning. The Worship Service and Religious Education for children is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The church is accessible and all are welcome.
