MELROSE — Donald J. Gautreau, 83, of Melrose, died on August 23, 2019.

Donald was born in New Brunswick, Canada in 1935 to Annie McGeoghegan Gautreau and Cyrille Gautreau. Don graduated from Boston English High School where he was an All Scholastic football player. A Marine Corps veteran, he played football for Camp Lejeune and was All Marine Guard in 1956.

He received his bachelors’ degree at Boston College, where he also played football and made many lifelong friends. He retired from the United States Secret Service after 20 years of service in Washington, D.C., the White House, Texas, and Boston. Married for 59 years to the love of his life Peggy, nothing meant more to him than his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Boston English High School Athletics.

Donald was the beloved husband of Margaret A. (Ryle) Gautreau. Loving father of Ann Ferzoco and Robert of Plymouth, Paulette Sullivan and John of Plymouth, Maria Mallett and Mark of N.J., John Gautreau and Becky of Pa. and Donald J. Gautreau Jr. and Melanie of Wisconsin. Cherished grandfather of Daniel, Anthony and Tessa, Laura and Mary Ferzoco, Kathleen, John, Annie and Julia Mallett, Mary, Sarah, Samuel and Jennifer Gautreau and Nicholas and Andrew Gautreau. Brother of the late Mary Aaron.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Wednesday, August 28. A funeral service was held at the funeral home on Thursday morning, August 29. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private.
