Honorable, responsible, authentic and refreshing
MELROSE — George F. Lovett, of Melrose, a man of many talents and many jobs, died peacefully on April 2, 2022 at the age of 86. He was born in Boston on October 25, 1935 to the late William and Margaret (Healy) Lovett. He was raised in Allston and graduated from Boston Technical High School.
George worked hard and had a lot of jobs throughout his life starting with a large paper route to support his family in his youth. Later work included multiple jobs, (some at the same time) as a taxi driver, the Gulf Gas Station, Dorothy Muriel’s Bakery, B&M Railroad as a yard worker and conductor, Boston Naval Shipyard, and lastly the U.S. Postal Service where he retired from after 36 years of government service. In addition to his many jobs he also served honorably in the United States Army.
George’s most important accomplishment was his 60 years of marriage to his beautiful wife, Evelyn, and raising his five children. He lived in Melrose for 48 years. Although he did not grow up in Melrose, he loved and followed Melrose High School sports. He was a proud member of the Melrose High School Hall of Fame Committee. He was also a member of the “back row boys” at the girls basketball and volleyball games. George was also a dedicated parishioner of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield.
A testimony from his sister Joan really sums up George – “Dear George will be sorely missed as he was certainly a “rock” for all that was right, honorable and responsible. In an age of photo shop he was totally authentic, real and refreshing. There was nothing fake about who he was and what he stood for. That was George… and what a blessing.”
George’s family would like to thank the Oosterman Rest Home for providing the care and love for him for the last seven months. We were blessed to have you care for him. We would also like to thank the fourth floor nurses and entire staff from Melrose Wakefield Hospital and Merrimack Valley Hospice for their care and support during a difficult time.
George was the beloved husband of Evelyn (Nicholson) Lovett of Melrose. Loving father of Mary Hardway and her husband, Richard, of Merrimac; Anne Clark and her husband, William Jr., of Melrose; George W. Lovett and his wife, Wendy, of Melrose; Robert Lovett and his late wife, Michelle, of Belmont, N.H.; and Mark Lovett of Beverly. Cherished grandfather of Matthew, Glen, Keith, Paige, Albert, Eric, Emma, William III, Scott, Brandon and Samantha. Proud great-grandfather of Jackson, Savannah, and Gabriel. Caring brother of William Lovett, Mary Lane, James Lovett, John Lovett, the late Robert Lovett, the late Richard Lovett, Patrick Lovett, Rita Meehan, Joan Bayne, Edward Lovett, and Thomas Lovett. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours was held on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose. A funeral Mass was held at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield, on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private.
Due to health concerns all guests were kindly asked to wear a face mask to the wake and funeral.
