MELROSE — Helen M. (Hurliman) Duval, 93, of Melrose, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Life Care Center of Stoneham following a lengthy illness. She is the wife of the late Frederick Duval.  

Helen was born on February 17, 1926 in Quincy, daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Schatzel) Hurliman. Helen grew up in Quincy and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, she resided in Melrose for the past 69 years.  

Helen worked at Lamson and Davis True Value Hardware in Malden as a cashier for many years. She previously worked for New England Telephone Company as a Switchboard Operator where she met her husband Frederick.  

She was an avid bowler and was a member of the Melrose Bowling League and bowled for many years at the Melrose Bowladrome. She also enjoyed playing Bingo at the VFW, crocheting afghans for gifts and working in her rose garden.  

Loving mother of Thomas Duval and his wife Mary of Washington, D.C., Brian W. Duval of Melrose, Bernice Smith and her husband Ben of Colchester, Conn. and the late Helen Marie Lawrence. Her son-in-law Marvin Lawrence, her brother-in- law George DeYoung. Grandmother of Erick, Shauna, Nicholas, Amanda and Thomas. She was the sister of the late Bernice DeYoung. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.  

Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Sunday, February 16 from 2-5 p.m. Funeral procession from the Gately Funeral Home, on Monday morning February 17 at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, 9 Herbert St. Melrose at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
