Past Treasurer and President for Mass. Teacher’s Assoc.

READING — James J. Babineau, Jr., 64, of Reading, formerly of Melrose, died at the Massachusetts General Hospital on December 16, 2017. Jim was born and raised in Somerville and a graduate of Somerville High School, Class of 1971. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Boston State Teacher’s College in 1975 and his master’s degree from Northeastern University in 1978.

He was a math teacher at Melrose High and Junior High school for 35 years before his retirement at the age of 58. Jim was a past Treasurer and President for the Mass. Teacher’s Assoc., for 15 years and also a Sealer for Weights and Measures for the towns of Melrose and Wilmington. He was an Adjunct Professor in math for North Shore Community College and enjoyed hockey, reading, history, space, current events, going out to eat, and his daily newspaper. Jim loved family gatherings and holidays, spending his time with his wife Mary Anne taking day trips to New Hampshire and Maine and his family was the most important part of his life.

He was the beloved husband of Mary Anne (Botte) Babineau for 40 years. Loving father of Sandra M. Babineau-Wilder and her husband Raymond of Reading, Julianne Carteiro and her husband Antonio of Saugus, Andrea Babineau and Michael MacPherson of Revere, Jeanine Peixoto and her husband Fabio of Saugus, Nicole Babineau and Bryan Deming of Saugus, and Mary Ricci and her husband Christopher of Weymouth. Cherished grampy of Brianna, Aubrey, Isaiah, Alexandra and Caleb. Caring brother of Patricia Blair of Melrose and Darryl Babineau of Ill. Also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, Dec. 21, from 4-8 p.m.  A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St., Reading on Friday, Dec. 22, at 10:30 a.m.  Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
