MELROSE — Donations to the Melrose Emergency Fund topped the $45,000 mark this week, with three weeks to go in the annual fundraiser. Like many local businesses, Buckalew’s General Store is contributing to the fund: Owner Robin Peevey will dedicate a percentage of holiday sales to the Emergency Fund, and she has also put a donation jar in the store.

While most people hear about the Emergency Fund during the holiday season, the fund provides assistance to Melrose residents all year round. The Emergency Fund is administered by city staff, through the Mayor’s Office and the Council on Aging, as part of their regular duties. This means that 100% of donations goes to direct aid, there are no administration costs.
