MELROSE — Manuel P. “Mannie” Goveia, 94, passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on April 7, 2018.

Mannie was born in Lowell on May 27, 1923 to the late Francesco and Mary (Ferreira) Goveia. He was raised in Lowell and East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School. Mannie served his country with pride in the US Army during WWII. He was a resident of Melrose since 1973. Mr. Goveia worked as a presser in the garment industry in Boston for many years, was a member of the International Garment Workers Union and held a seat on the joint board in the union.

He summered in Wareham for many years where he enjoyed many good times with his family, grandchildren and friends. Mannie and his wife Martha also spent many winters in Barefoot Bay, Florida, was a member of the German Club, the Italian Club and the Organ Club at Barefoot Bay and they were wonderful dancers winning many contests over the years. They also were a member of the Luck Group from the West End and remained close with that group of friends from their teenage years all the way to the present day. Mannie was a member of the VFW in East Boston, enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Mercury Bowling League for many years. Mr. Goveia was a talented musician starting with the violin at a young age and then was a self taught piano player, organ player and harmonica player.

Mannie was the beloved husband of 70 years to Martha J. (Lisitano) Goveia. Loving father of the late Stephanie Goveia, Philip Goveia and his wife Marilyn of Melrose, Karen Dame and her husband Stephen of Tewksbury, and Jayniene McCarthy of Lynn. Cherished grandfather of Mark, Lauren, Mannie, Christine, Brittany, the late Stephen, Kayla and Christopher. Proud great-grandfather of Molly, Jay, Emma, Kaylieh and Caydence. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Tuesday, April 10.  Funeral procession from the Gately Funeral Home was on Wednesday morning, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, 9 Herbert St. Melrose. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell will be private. WWII Army Veteran.
