Devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother

STONEHAM — Margaret “Peg” Murphy, 89, of Stoneham, formerly of Melrose, passed away on October 3, 2022, following a full, wonderful life. Peg was born the youngest of three daughters to Dominic and Jeannette (Dupras) Travalini in Melrose and was raised in Everett and Melrose.  She attended Melrose Public Schools and graduated from Melrose High School, class of 1950. Peg earned a diploma from Carney Hospital School of Nursing and worked for almost her entire career as an operating room nurse at Winchester Hospital.

Peg married John “Red” Murphy in 1955 and together they lived in Melrose where they raised five children. Peg was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; an avid bridge player, skilled seamstress, prolific gardener and ardent crafter. She was adept at home repairs, and had a keen eye for interior decorating. In her youth she played a variety of sports, and later in life enjoyed league bowling, tennis and swimming. She enjoyed spending summers at Goose Rocks beach in Kennebunkport, Maine with her family. Peg was a devout member of Most Blessed Sacrament Parish. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved very much. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Margaret was the beloved wife of the late John F. “Red” Murphy, Jr. Loving mother of Susan McBrine and her husband Richard of Melrose, Dominic Murphy and his wife Michelle of Swansea, Jeannette Murphy of Stoneham, Joseph Murphy and his wife Judy of Melrose and Martha Luther and her husband Randall of Durham, Conn. Proud grandmother of Richard “Mack” McBrine and his partner Kat DeStefano, Margaret “Maggie” Cefalo and her husband Nicholas, Kelly Murphy, Elizabeth Macdonald and her husband Nick, Jill Ready and her husband Jerrod, Joseph Murphy, Andrea Murphy, Jeremy Murphy,  Andrew Murphy and Elbridge “E.J.” Luther and Alison Luther. Sister of the late Jacqueline Tuell and Jeanne Rishell. Great grandmother of Julian, Avery, Seamus, Ayva, and Jack. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Margaret’s memory to Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 429 Upham St., Melrose.
