NORTH READING — Four members of the North Reading A’s received postseason honors from the North Shore Baseball League coaches.

Evan Brown led the way as he was named the Rookie of the Year. The right fielder, who goes to Northern Essex Community College, finished fifth in the league in average at .452. The Haverhill resident came in sixth overall in RBI with 18 and fourth in on-base percentage at .561.

“He is a five-tool player who was a stalwart in our lineup,” said A’s player manager Joe Dardeno. “He played 23 games and was also a good defensive player in right.”

Brown was also a member of the All-League team along with another first-year player, Cole Farmer. Farmer, an outfielder and second baseman, was 15th in the league in average at .423. He was tied for fourth in RBI with 20 and tied for 14th in on-base percentage at  .506.

“He is a gritty and talented player,” said Dardeno.

Farmer, like Brown, is also going into his second year at Northern Essex Community College and he also hails from Haverhill.

The two other A’s, along with Brown and Farmer to make the All-Rookie team are Derek Hoh and Phil Nichols.

Hoh was 11th in the league in average at .431. with an on-base percentage of .605. The Southern Maine Community College student drew 21 walks (tied for second in the league) and had 11 RBI. He tied for seventh in the league in steals with 11.

Nichols, meanwhile, went 5-2 on the mound with an earned-run average of 3.33. The Keene State hurler pitched 40 innings walking 13 and striking out 56. The five wins are tied for first in the league and the strikeouts are second overall.

“Those four players had a major impact on us and they represent a bright future for us,” said Dardeno.

North Reading resident Mike Vittozzi was nominated for the all-league team but was not selected. Vittozzi had a strong summer as he hit .431 which was ninth in the league. The second baseman had an on-base percentage of .547 which is seventh overall in the league.

Last year, the A’s went 3-17-1 finishing in 11th-place out of 12 teams. This summer, they improved to 11-13  coming in 9th place as they just missed a playoff bid by one point.

The Beverly Recs won the league title beating the Peabody Champions three games to two in the finals that concluded back on Aug. 19.

Overall, five of the A’s were from North Reading. The three other North Reading residents, along with Dardeno and Vittozzi, were Frank Cassarino (infielder), Ryan Baker (pitcher), and Derek Reilly (catcher). Cassarino and Vittozzi were on the team last season.
