NORTH READING — The athletics complex at North Reading High School continues to improve and get more versatile.

Athletic Director David Johnson recently announced plans for phase two of construction that will place new lights on the practice field between Arthur J. Kenney Field and the softball field.

Multiple high school teams and various town groups use this field.

“It’s another big step for the athletics complex at North Reading High School,” said Johnson.

Phase one placed lights on the back of the existing light fixtures on the football field. Those were installed in June. According to Johnson, these illuminate about 30 percent of the practice field.

Phase two will add two more light poles on the opposite side so that the majority of the field can be illuminated.

“The District is pleased to have the funding to pursue what is considered phase two of the athletic field lighting project which will bring lights to the multi-purpose grass practice field,” said Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Michael Connelly and Superintendent of Schools Patrick Daly in a joint statement. “This should provide a significant enhancement for both school and town groups expanding the use of the field. We are hopeful the project will be completed before the end of the calendar year.”

Funding for phase two was provided by the North Reading Secondary Schools Building Committee.

Johnson said a walkthrough is planned for Sept. 1. After that, the school can sort through bids and begin the process. The plan is for the lights to be constructed shortly after Thanksgiving Day.
