NORTH READING — The North Reading High School girls’ track and field team hosted Triton Regional High School on Monday, April 5 and came away with an impressive 61-24 victory over the Vikings.
The Hornet sting was led by a sweep in the sprinting events (55 meter hurdles, 55 meter dash and 300 meters) and the field events (shot put and high jump) as the Hornets outscored the Vikings 49-0 in those events. The Hornets even dominated the non-scored exhibition long jump and 4×200 meter relay, and had the top two teams in the 4×400 meter relay. Not to be outdone, the mid distance and distance squad held their own against an impressive Viking squad that outscored the Hornets 24-12.
Leading the charge was captain Katelyn Gorgenyi who scored 10 points with a victory in the 55 meter hurdles (8.50) and shot put (29’ 1.75”) leading a sweep in both events. She was joined in the hurdles by Ella Monteleone (9.77) and Ashley Rabbitt (9.83) and in the shot put by Emma Mini (27’ 10” – personal best) and Samantha Magner (23’ 9.75” – personal best).
In the 55 meter dash, sophomore Kayla Budny led the sweep sprinting a speedy 7.57 seconds, followed closely by fellow sophomores Ava McIntyre (7.82) and Ella Mazzie (7.86). In the 300 meters, junior Madison DiNapoli led the sweep with a 44.3 second run, followed by sophomore Sami Patch (48.2) and captain Kerri-Ann Sexton (49.1). Rounding out the sweep in the sprinting and field events was Ella Monteleone (4’ 10”) and Madison Vant (4’ 8”) in the high jump with no third place finish in the event.
Captain Julia Thorstad (600 meters in 1:42) and junior Annie MacLellan (1000 meters in 3:18.5) led the distance squad with their respective first place finishes. Karleigh Budny (600 meters in 1:57.0) and Annalise Butler (two mile in 12:46.3) added two third place finishes as well.
Rounding out the meet was the 4×400 meter relay team of Madison DiNapoli, Ashley Rabbit, Annie MacLellan and Julia Thorstad that ran a winning time of 4:26.4. The Hornets took on Pentucket Regional High School on Thursday, April 8. Look for that story in next week’s Transcript.
Tie Clippers, defending CAL champs, in opener
In their season opener against Newburyport on Wednesday, March 31, the Hornets tied the defending Cape Ann League champion Newburyport Clippers 43-43. It was an even meet throughout, with the Clippers winning the 55 meter dash, one mile, two mile, high jump and shot put and the Hornets winning the 55 meter hurdles, 300 meters, 600 meters, 1000 meters and 4×400 meter relay to force the tie in the final event.
The Hornet were led by team captain Katelyn Gorgenyi who scored 9.25 points, winning the 55 meter hurdles (8.41 seconds), taking second in the shot put (29’ 8.25”) and running third leg in the winning 4×400 meter relay (4:19.1).
Fellow Captain Julia Thorstad scored 6.25 points, winning the 600 meters (1:38.0) and anchoring the 4×400 meter relay.
Maddie DiNapoli scored 6 .25 points as well, winning the 300 meters (43.70) and leading off the 4×400 meter relay.
Captain Ashley Rabbitt picked up 2.25 points as part of the winning 4×400 meter relay and also got third in the 55 meter hurdles (9.7), Ella Montelone finished second in the 55 meter hurdles (9.3) and in the high jump (4’ 10”) picking up six points for the team. Annie MacLellan won the 1000 meters (3:26.5) to pick up five points. Annalise Butler took second in the two mile (12:57.8) for three points. Ava McIntyre ran a speedy 7.89 seconds in the 55 meter dash for three points. Rounding out the point scorers were Kayla Hannan with a third place finish in the one mile (6:27.0) and Madison Vant with a third place finish in the high jump (4’ 4”).
Additional varsity competitors included Kayla Budny (55 meter dash, 7.93 seconds), Ava Mazzei (55 meter dash, 8.10 seconds), Ava Rosati (8.28 seconds), Sam Patch (300 meters, 47.1), Kerri Ann Sexton (300 meters, 47.6), Marykate Lundy (300 meters, 48.8) , Karleigh Budny (600 meters, 1:55.3), Jessica Hill (1000 meters, 4:09.3), Brooke Harrington (high jump, 4’ 4”), Emma Mini (shot put, 25’ 9.5”), Samantha Magner (shot put, 21’ 4”) and Sabrina Mini (19’ 10.25”).
