NORTH READING The North Reading High School golf team continues to ride the wave of success in the Cape Ann League.

The Hornets have put together seven consecutive league wins, solidifying at the very least a share of the Cape Ann League Championship title, with two matches to play, one against a sharp Rockport team at home on October 6 (after press time) and a make-up match against Pentucket scheduled for October 13. In between these two matches is the CAL Open Championship being held today (October 7) at 9 a.m.

The team does not seem to be concerned about those things sticking to the successful recipe that has put them in this position and to focus only on the “next” match.

Tank Triton, 137-129

After a monster win over Newburyport, the brass of the league was not out of the way. On Wednesday, September 22 the Hornets took on undefeated league powerhouse Triton Vikings. The match was played at the Hillview Country Club and with strong performances from seniors Tyler Murphy, Matt Ryan and Andrew Peppe, the team came away victorious, handing Triton their first loss with a score of 137-129 and laying the foundation for a shot at the league championship.

Sting Tigers, Pioneers

A 125-89 win at Ipswich Country Club on September 23 vs Ipswich High with great outings from reigning team MVP Isabel Brozena, captain Jack Fischer and sophomore Andrew Mountain set the pace for a huge match the following day against league rival Lynnfield at Sagamore Golf Course. The one-two punch of Brozena and captain Tyler Murphy led the way against the Pioneers, followed by senior captain Andrew Daley’s clutch performance and freshman Jason Curran, who solidified the 135-124 victory with an impressive 23-point afternoon.

Brozena top performer at Myopia

On Tuesday, October 5 the team traveled to Myopia Hunt Club in Hamilton to take on first-place (CAL small division) Hamilton-Wenham. Freshman Jason Curran continued to play well starting the day by birdying the first two holes. It was no surprise that Brozena was again the top performer in the match with 28 points, with Fischer and senior Joey Collins’ personal best performances at the extremely difficult course, the team won again by score of 135-109.
