NORTH READING On Sept. 30, the North Reading High volleyball team won at Georgetown 3-1. It was the second win in a row for the Hornets who improved to 3-5 overall and in the Cape Ann League.

The Hornets won the first match, 25-20 but the Royals won game two, 25-20. North Reading then won the final two sets, 26-24 and 25-17.

“We controlled the opening set,” said Hornets head coach Mike Milone. “We made some mistakes early in the second set and could not recover in time. But, I felt confident again starting in that third set.”

Senior captain Rose Morelli had a team-high 30 digs while fellow 12th-grader Erin Scanlon had 14 kills.

Junior captain Abby Gerber led the squad in assists with 31 and service aces with three.

North Reading, which entered this week in sixth place in the CAL, also completed the season sweep over the Royals as they beat them 3-2 in the season opener on Sept. 8 at home.

Sweep Sachems 3-0

The day before the Georgetown win, the Hornets swept host Pentucket 3-0. They won the three sets, 25-10, 25-18 and 25-23.

“I was able to do some subbing that game,” recalled Milone. “Pentucket is still a pretty new program, only in its third year on its own.”

Senior Gina Mulik had six kills against the Sachems while Gerber had 14 assists. Megan Slattery had a team-high five service aces while Morelli had eight digs.

The next two matches will be non-league ones for the Hornets as they host Marblehead on Oct. 7 and then visit Peabody on Oct. 8.

North Reading returns to CAL play on Oct. 12 as they host Hamilton-Wenham.

All three matches will start at 6 p.m.
