NORTH READING — Last Friday evening, the North Reading High volleyball team lost to visiting Newburyport 3-1. With that defeat, the Hornets fell to 0-2.
The Clippers won the first set 25-19 but the Hornets took set two 25-21.
Newburyport, who improved to 1-1 with the victory, won a tight third game, 26-24, and they won the fourth set, 25-18, to close out the match.
“Their strength lies with one player (Sydney Yim), and she does a great job of keeping the ball in play,” said Hornets head coach Mike Milone of Yim who will be playing at Purdue next year. “We also made too many unforced errors.”
Yim, who had 11 kills, eight service aces and nine assists in the march, was the Cape Ann League’s co-MVP last season.
Sarah Gerber led the Hornets in digs with 12 and kills with eight.
Senior co-captain Grace Gorman had 17 assists while senior Anna Bryk had a team-high four blocks.
Senior co-captain Liz Kelly had four service aces.
On Friday (March 19), the Hornets host the defending Cape Ann League champions, Lynnfield, at 5:30 p.m.
The team will then have its first road match of the year on March 22 as they visit Pentucket. That match will also start at 5:30 p.m.
