NORTH READING — The Hornets scored twice in the second half to fight back from a two-goal deficit to tie the visiting Newburyport Clippers 2-2 on September 26. Senior captains Nick Catino and Ian Branconnier scored for North Reading with Catino adding an assist.

NRHS came out sluggish in very hot conditions and Newburyport held the majority of the possession in the first half. The constant defending caught up with the Hornets, and in the 22nd minute, Newburyport got on the board first. On the play, senior goalie Burke Riesenberg lost a cross in the sun and the ball’s momentum carried it into the net. The Clippers took a 1-0 lead into the half.

At halftime, North Reading made adjustments and controlled the first 10 minutes of the second half. Unfortunately though, in the 57th minute the Clippers scored a goal directly off a corner kick to make it 2-0. The Hornets refused to go away and in the 64th minute, Branconnier cut the lead in half when he buried a rebound off of a Catino shot.

Less than five minutes later NRHS tied it up when senior captain Nick Carpenter delivered a free kick from 40 yards out right to Catino for a terrific volley finish. North Reading continued to pour it on the rest of the way, but Newburyport was able to hang on for the tie.

Get Past Generals 1-0

Junior Ben Tayas scored the lone goal of the game as the Hornets downed the Hamilton-Wenham Generals 1-0 on Thursday afternoon. The goal was the first of Tayas’s varsity career. Senior captain Burke Riesenberg made three saves to earn his second shutout of the season.

North Reading needed a win and earned a shutout victory. The win was punctuated by great goalkeeping from Riesenberg and outstanding defense from Nick Carpenter, Nick Catino, sophomore Ryan McKinney and junior Sean Haynes.
