NORTH READING — Thanksgiving is less than eight weeks away!  Don’t Panic!  No need to start thawing your turkey but now is the perfect time to start training for the 9th Annual North Reading Turkey Trot 5k! This 5k family focused event will take place on Thursday, November 23 at 8 a.m., at Ipswich River Park.  Last year, nearly 1,800 participants donned their traditional race shirts and crossed the finish line!  The trot welcomes runners and walkers and ALL finishers receive a custom medal upon completion. This year the race will provide the popular “performance” t-shirts which have been a fan favorite!

As in years past, awards are given to nine different age brackets as well as the top family teams. The North Reading Public School Challenge continues to be a driving force for registration as the top school yields $300 for physical education equipment!  Moreover, all funds generated from the event benefit the Middle/High School athletic programs.  In 2016, the race supported the installation of sod and sprinkler systems on the new playing fields on the MS/HS campus.  Other projects funded from the proceeds include a score board the Little School softball field and fencing to protect benches at the Hood School baseball field.

Last year North Reading High School’s former track star, Brenden Carter bested Tom Helms in the 1, 2 finish.  Both currently run for Assumption College Cross Country team so the 2017 battle will be better than ever! On the ladies side, former North Reading star Rachel Mitton secured first from the start and never looked back!

Race Director Joe Davis states, “The 9th year will by far be the best!  We now have New Balance on board as our lead sponsor and we look forward to this ongoing partnership. In addition, we are counting on Mother Nature to cooperate and bring us another beautiful day for a run around North Reading! To date, we already have 200 runners signed up so I would recommend signing up early before we reach out 1500 capacity.”
