NORTH READING — With a solid core of returning players with significant varsity experience, the 2018 boys’ tennis team will look to qualify for the state tournament for the first time in three years.

“We are certainly hoping for an improvement from last season. We have a lot of quality players coming back so we’re expecting progress,” said head coach Mark Bisognano.

Senior Brett Allan and juniors Ryan Landers, Trevor Wilson, Seth Hemley and Mike Tyrrell all return. Allan, Wilson and Hemley will serve as captains.

The lineup is still up in the air, but these five experienced players will definitely see a lot of action somewhere in the singles or doubles positions.

To round out the varsity squad there, are some talented players that will make the jump from last year’s JV team.

Senior Tyler Lee; juniors Duncan Macneil, Evan Sturtevant, Joshua Zelikman and Ethan Pelmas; sophomores Michaelangelo Tsaparlis and Stephen Vontzalides; and freshman Jonathan Belinowiz are all in the mix for playing time.

Bisognano feels that with so much talent that NRHS should make the state tournament.

“I believe that the state tournament is an achievable goal for this group. The strength of this team is its depth. The difference between our top five players is negligible so while we don’t have a superstar, at least not at this point, we believe our depth will be able to power the team into the tournament.”
