NORTH READING — It was a good day for the North Reading High field hockey team on Monday as they shut out visiting Hamilton-Wenham, 2-0, on a hot, humid day. With that win, the Hornets improved to 2-5.

“The first third of the season didn’t go as well as we wanted,” admitted Hornets first-year head coach Andrea Slaven. “We see this game as the second-third of the season and we are now 1-0.”

North Reading scored single goals in each half. Sophomore, Emma Lord, scored the first one unassisted with 16:54 left in the first half. Abby Carroll scored the other one with 10:16 remaining in the game. Lord assisted on that tally.

Hornet goalie, Emilie Warren made ten saves as she improved to 2-5. It was also her second shutout of the year.

The win also snapped a three-game losing streak.

Defeated by Ipswich

Last Saturday, the Hornets lost at home to Ipswich, 4-1. The Tigers scored two goals in each half.

Senior captain Olivia Esposito scored with 40 seconds left in the game as the Hornets were able to avoid the shutout.

Warren made six stops in that game.

Edged by Newburyport

Last Thursday was the team’s most heartbreaking defeat as they were nipped, 1-0, by visiting Newburyport.

“They called a penalty shot for us in the second half but then the officials changed their minds and didn’t give us one,” explained Slaven. “Then, a few minutes later they awarded them with a penalty shot and they scored. It was a discouraging game and hard to swallow.”

The Clippers goal came with 5:08 left in the game.

Warren made five saves in that contest.

The Hornets next game will be on Friday as they visit Pentucket. They stay on the road next Tuesday afternoon as they go to Manchester-Essex which is the team Slaven coached a few years ago for three seasons.

Both games will start at 3:45 p.m.
