NORTH READING — Two members of the North Reading High volleyball team were named to the Cape Ann League First-Team All-Stars this fall.
The two Hornets to make the team are senior Sami Mutti and sophomore Sydney Scholz.
For Mutti, it was her second All-Star appearance as she was a CAL Second-Team All-Star last year. It was Scholz’s first-ever All-Star appearance.
Mutti, a middle hitter, has the team’s highest hitting percentage at .167. She was second on the team in digs (133), kills (122), serve-receive (89) and blocks (six).
She was third on the team in service aces with 32.
“Sami has been a starter for us since her sophomore year and bounced around for us,” said Hornets head coach Mike Milone. “She has been a foundational player for our squad.”
Scholz, a middle hitter, was first in kills (148), service aces (41) and blocks (28).
“Sydney was our biggest offensive threat,” pointed out Milone. “She is our strongest middle attacker and one of our best ball handlers. She was more consistent this year than as a freshman.”
Although no Hornet made the CAL Second-Team All-Stars this season, to get two First Team ones is a major accomplishment according to Milone.
“To get two First-Team All-Stars is a pretty big win for us,” said Milone.
This season, the Hornets finished at 7-10 overall and 3-8 in the Cape Ann League just missing qualifying for the states by two wins.
